new to dvorak, better ?/ placement

For all those Dvorak user's out there, do you have the "?/" in default placement?

I ask because I'm trying to learn dvorak (after being a fairly proficient qwerty typist for _many_ years), and since I'm a Unix sysadmin, I find myself reaching for the '/' key fairly often. I never needed that reach for qwerty, so it feels odd for me to reach over there that much.

I have / and ? mapped to the left hand under the index and middle fingers on the home row in the PunctPad layout, and I have T3F-hold on both hands mapped to PunctPad On. / and ? are now as fast as - and _ - which is great, because I use them a lot.

Hope that helps - I have lots of other layout goodies, if anyone is interested.

Well to answer my own question, I have come up with the following (minor) changes:

- The right-of-RH-pinky column is changed so that it is more like the QWERTY layout: "-_" is next to '0', "\|" is next to 'L', and "/?" is next to 'S'.
- Following the bradheintz suggested LH punctpad changes, I changed/added: '/' on 'U', '?' on 'E', ''' on 'O', '"' on 'A', ';' on 'P', and ':' on '.'

These are the changes I've come up with so far in the week or so of typing slowly with the Dvorak layout. More suggestions are welcome.

I would suggest making heavy use of all three pads to eliminate reaches. Instead of taking up three keys with ',. I have those three enable number pad, punctuation pad and symbol pad. Then I have everything I need available under my right hand.

Code: Select all
Normal:

fgcrl
dhtns
bmwvz

Number pad:

56789
01234
+-*£$

Symbol pad:

</\*>   Here, * is actually !=

;:_*%   Here, * is actually ==

Punctuation pad:

{`"@}
(',.)
[=?!]

Takes a while to learn, but you can remove reaches entirely.
